Dr. Grigor’s Dreams

About

In 1967, Dr. Grigor opened The Center for Future Experiences, an organization dedicated to the study of human dreams. A psychoanalyst practicing for over thirty years, Dr. Grigor had come to believe dreams acted like a kind of mystical intuition, the antecedent to a moment of deja vu, a premonition of future experiences. Grigor aimed to explore this notion and understand the evolutionary advantage of human dreams.

His research suggested that dreams had important medicinal properties, serving as a kind of internal psychotherapy. Dreams helped people better process reality by connecting them with their subconscious. But in 1974, Dr. Grigor noticed an alarming trend: the number of patients reporting sleep and dream deprivation had doubled in just six years. Those who suffered from deprivation reported higher rates of isolation, alienation, and apathy. Almost all considered themselves deeply disconnected. Grigor theorized that immersive, dreamlike trips taken in a sensory chamber could simulate dreams or similar abstract experiences that could aid with internal processing, re-sensitization, and reconnection to the collective unconscious. But he never got the chance to test it; Grigor went missing in 1979; his body never found. Soon after his disappearance, his laboratory closed, his work was rejected as pseudoscience, and research into dreams and the subconscious soon faded into memory.

Forty years later, an anonymous organization has resurrected Dr. Grigor’s program and realized it for a modern audience, calling it the Museum of Future Experiences.

In groups of six, subjects are guided through Dr. Grigor’s experimental psychological process, beginning with each participant taking a detailed, probing quiz designed to gather insights into the individual’s psychological state, preferences, fears, and desires. The answers from the quiz are fed into a sophisticated algorithm. This algorithm analyzes the data to understand each participant's unique psychological profile. Based on the quiz results analyzed by the algorithm, a set of customized "dreams" or virtual experiences is given to each participant.
